Studio History

Carol Byrd began teaching in the living room of her parents' home in 1953, with her mother playing accompaniment on the family piano.  Week by week, the number of students increased until her father converted a small area of the family’s basement into a studio.  Over the years the studio continued to grow as Carol married and raised a family that included five children.  With help from daughters Dana, Susan, and Carla, Byrd’s Dance & Gymnastics at one time included three Kansas locations.  One studio in Kansas City, a second studio serving the Edwardsville-Bonner Springs areas, and a third location in Overland Park.

  Byrd’s Dance & Gymnastics is now under the direction of Susan Byrd, with Carla Byrd-Ladish as the office manager.  The studio occupies a 10,000 square foot space that includes two dance rooms, a gymnastics training facility, and a lobby area.  The studio offers classes in tap, ballet, jazz, hip-hop, and gymnastics. 

Dance students enjoy success performing and competing locally and nationally.  Gymnastics students compete at area meets sanctioned by the USA Gymnastics program.  Staff members include long-term students, which helps to maintain consistency in training, though Byrd’s prides itself on providing their students the latest in dance styles and current dance trends.

To provide our students with dance and gymnastic training that will positively affect their lives.  To integrate the talent and physical fitness of fine arts and athletics with a sense of confidence, self-esteem, accomplishment and good health.  To provide them with skills, training and discipline that will enhance their academic, social and personal futures.

Beginner level classes:  (ages 3 & up)
 Once a week combination class – 1 ½ hour class
  45 minutes dance (tap & ballet)
  45 minutes gymnastics
   $60 monthly fee

Intermediate level classes:  (ages 6 & up)
 Once a week combination class – 2 hour class
  One hour dance (tap, ballet & jazz)
  One hour gymnastics
   $68 monthly fee

Supplies needed:
 Tan tap shoes, pink ballet shoes, and leotard or dancewear
 $25 enrollment fee

Policy & Procedures

• Classes for the 2007-08 season begin on Monday, August 20th.
• An annual $25.00 enrollment and supplemental insurance is mandatory at the time of enrollment.
• Parents are welcome to observe class during “Visitation Week”, which is the first full week of November and February, and once again in mid-May.
• Shoes, leotards, tights and other dancewear needs can be ordered through the studio.  All orders must be paid in full when you receive the order.
• Please mark your child’s name in all dance shoes so that lost or misplaced shoes can be returned to the rightful owner.  Unless otherwise specified, please purchase for your child – tan tap shoes, pink  ballet shoes, tan jazz shoes.
• Appropriate dance/gymnastic attire is required.  Proper attire will enable your child to work and feel great.
• Inclement weather:  In case of severe weather, classes will be canceled.  If you are in doubt, please call the studio.
•  Monthly tuition is due the first lesson of each month.  A $5 late fee is added to delinquent accounts on the twentieth day of each month thereafter.
• There is a $20.00 charge for a check returned by your bank
• Regular attendance is an important aspect of your child’s training.  In case of absence, for whatever reason, you are entitled to come in for a make-up lesson.  No deductions are allowed for missed lessons.
• If a student will be missing a class, a phone call is always appreciated.
• Students participating in our annual dance recital must have their accounts paid in full in order to receive costumes and participate in the recital.
• The studio will be closed during the following 2007-08 dates:

September 1-3 ~ Labor Day
October 31 ~ Halloween
Nov. 22-25 ~ Thanksgiving
Dec. 22 - Jan. 5 ~ Winter Break
March 21-23 ~ Easter
May 23-26 ~ Memorial Day

Monthly tuition rates are not pro-rated due to holidays; however, you are entitled and encouraged to schedule a make-up lesson for your child.  Please inquire with your child’s teacher or at the front desk for an appropriate make-up time.  Make-up classes are not always available for some advanced level students.
