Our studio history is a story which I never grow tired of telling.
I’m very proud of our past and always excited for the future!
— Susan Byrd, Director
The year was 1953, a young woman had a passion for dance and a desire to work with children...and so my mother, Carol Adkins, began teaching dance classes in her parents' home. Students learned tap and ballet on the hardwood floors of the living room, with my grandmother providing music for classes on the family piano. As enrollment increased and the living room became too small, my grandfather, a carpenter by trade, turned the basement into a dance studio — and "The Top Hat Dancing School" was born!
My mother continued teaching and furthering her dance training throughout the '50s, traveling by train to Chicago, Dallas and California to attend classes and conventions with the National Association of Dance & Affiliated Arts. After marrying my father, Sylvester, the dance studio continued for years in the basement of the home I grew up in at 45th & Haskell in Kansas City, Kansas. Over the years, the studio continued to grow, requiring larger studio space and prompting several moves.
In 1976, Nadia Comaneci was the first woman to score a perfect 10 at the Olympic Games. This provided motivation for the purchase of one balance beam, and "Carol Byrd’s Dancing Studio" became "Carol Byrd’s Dance & Gymnastics".
The studio has grown from humble beginnings to our current 10,000+ square foot facility, enriching the lives of many students along the way and now teaching a second generation of students.
We invite you to drop by our center anytime to view our facility and become acquainted with our staff. See for yourself why Byrd's Dance & Gymnastics has a proven and long standing tradition of excellence.
